A Role-Playing Game (RPG) is a genre defined by intrinsic rather than extrinsic character growth and progression, and player agency, direction, and customization within a story world. On this site, the definition is intentionally broad in order to encompass RPG subgenres, regional traditions, and hybrids with other genres that still preserve intrinsic growth. This list does include RPG hybrids, meaning games belonging primarily to other, non-RPG genres which have been fused with traditional RPG mechanics, namely intrinsic, incremental, statistical character growth, customization, and progression.
For a complete list of RPG mechanics and commonalities, consider the following: Character Roles, Character Growth, Character Stats, Variables, Combat, Turn-based, Narrative, Exploration, and Economy. The first three should be viewed as primary and essential. The last six are frequent, particularly in earlier RPGs ahead of modern hybridization, but not explicitly required for an RPG to be an RPG. They are instead reflections or outcomes of the first three.
